TUNNEL TEMPLE

This is the first tunnel temple is world.This is also called the buddhist tunnel temple The oll paintings of this tunnel depict the various stories of buddha in his previous births were taken from the lemmags Jathaka story books.this tunnel is 600 feet long and was divided into six sections this was built after excavating a large hill.There was a shrine where the relics of Buddha are statue The sacred bo- tree and the stupa (pagoda) can be seen above the tunnel temple.

The foundation was laid by hon Anagarika Dharmapala devoted Buddhist monk on 05th of march 1939 and the 88 cubits long Buddha statue was contructed.This contruction was completed in 1976.

FOUNDER MEMBERS OF THE TEMPLE

Most Rev:Parawahera Rewatha Thero was the chief incumbent of this temple who started the construction He dedicated his whole life to comple this massive task with the help of lay disiples

When he came to this place it was a thiclc jungle and it was abuot half an acre.This priest commited himself and contructed the enomous Buddha statue and two stories of the shrine. He was a student of Rev:Bedigama Ratanapala Nayaka thero.who was the principal of Matara Maha Manthinda Pirivena ( school for the novice monks ) Rev: Parawahara Rewatha thero passed away on 18th of August in 1968.

His sucessor was Rev:dawulagala Sangarathana Thero his a tremendous services to this temple later it became an educational centre of the area and this priest passed away on 28th of december 2002
